Press the PAUSE key on the keybaord when the memory test comes up - down in the lower left corner, you will see a group of numbers - this is the BIOS identifer string. Write this down. Also, towards the top, just above the memory test, there should be the another BIOS version and the CPU Speed - Award or AMI. Write this down also. with this info you can usually identify the motherboard manufacturer and model number.

Also, since this board has onboard video, you will also want to look at the chipset chips - the roughly one inch square chips on the motherboard itself - usually one has a heatsink on it (green or gold is normal colors). Sometimes, there is no writing on the heatsink, so yo wil have to CAREFULLY pry off the heatsink (its stucj with double sided tape, so you can re stick it in place).

A much easier way of doing all of this, assuming you can boot the motherboard and get into windows, is to use a utility. One of the best ones around is SiSOft Sandra (the System ANalyser, Diagnostic and Reporting Assistant).

You can download a free version here:

http://www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/sandra/

This utility will tell you the BIOS version, Motherboard model and maker, video, type (and brand) of memory chips, motherboard, cpou and case temperature, fan speeds, and much, much more info than you ever wanted to know about your system.

: Hi VC Tech person...;) recently I got as a "gift" a P2 Cryix M2 based computer with nothing on it. Only after i installed Win98se did I find out that the person who gave it to me had nothing else for me, like drivers for the onboard sound and video components, or any manuals. I am now at a loss. The only graphic setting I get is 16 colors at 640x480. Is there such a way to either download the correct drivers...I have scoured the Net...or is there a utility program that can deduce what drivers I should be looking for. The only info I have is that for a milli-second there is a "SiS true color graphics adapter" sentence that flashes as it begins to boot up...I usually don't like asking for help, but I am at a loss as to what to do. Any help would and will be greatly appreciated. Take care...

: Lyle...

: oh yeah...there is a chip or something that on the Motherboard that says "Tex Pro 2" if that helps at all.
